Americans will be grappling with a number of sensitive and critical issues throughout 2013 and beyond. Some new, some old and some never-ending – concerns about race, religion, violence, politics, guns, climate change, war and civic responsibility are just some of the issues that may polarize all or segments of the nation. We The People will bring awareness to different viewpoints in the hopes of educating its readership. Please be encouraged to join in and share your perspective.

In 1989 Congressman John Conyers issued a “Call for Reparations.” Conyers introduced HR – 40, “The Forty Acres and a Mule Bill.” It would not implement reparations but develop a federal government commission, appointed by the President and Congressional leaders to study the issue of reparations. Conyers said at the time “no one questioned whether slave owners ought to be compensated for the loss of their property, and the government acceded.” He further argued that rather than divide us as a nation “reparations would be helpful, they would bring healing” – because they would start by “acknowledging that there was a crime against humanity.” (Quote source: Wikipedia).
