Americans will be grappling with a number of sensitive and critical issues throughout 2013 and beyond. Some new, some old and some never-ending – concerns about race, religion, violence, politics, guns, climate change, war and civic responsibility are just some of the issues that may polarize all or segments of the nation. In 1946, Boxer Jack Johnson died. Johnson was the First African-American World Heavyweight Champion from 1908 – 1915. Documentary Filmmaker Ken Burns noted that “for more than thirteen years, Jack Johnson was the most famous and the most notorious African-American on Earth.”

In 1940 Marcus Garvey died. A National Hero of Jamaica. Garvey was a political leader, publisher, journalist, entrepreneur and orator. A staunch proponent of the Black Nationalist and Pan African-ism Movements, Garvey founded the Universal Negro Improvement Association and African Communities League (UNIA – ACL).
