The Kentucky Center for African-American Heritage recently opened the photo exhibit entitled “Exceptional People in the African Diaspora” in support of Louisville’s 2013 Photo Biennial. The exhibit, which runs now through December 31st, 2013, showcases the images of exceptional Africans and African-Americans internationally, nationally and throughout the Commonwealth of Kentucky.
“The significance of this exhibit is that it gave us a chance to profile some noted African-American photographers and to come together as the newly formed Louisville Alliance of African-American Photographers (LAAAP). Our mission is to document the history and culture of African-Americans in Kentucky, nationally and internationally,” said Aukram Burton, Exhibit and Program Chair of The Kentucky Center for African-American Heritage (KCAAH).
The African Diaspora refers to the communities throughout the world that are descended from the historic movement of people’s from Africa. The exhibiting photographers represent a wide range of expertise and experience and are considered to be some of the best in their field.
The photography represented in the exhibition is intended to serve as a vehicle to illuminate intersections between communities throughout the African Diaspora. The aim is to illustrate common stories of resistance, celebrations, struggles for freedom, and spirituality evoking a sense of the richness of African cultural identity.
Participating photographers include: Clinton Bennett, Aukram Burton, Eddie Davis, Bud Dorsey, Jack Norris, Regina Thomas, Sam Upshaw Jr., Marvin Young, George Williams, and Keith Williams. There will be an “Opening Reception” Friday, October 11, 2013 from 7-9:00 p.m., and a “Gallery Talk” Friday, November 1, 2013 from 7-9:00 p.m. The exhibit and subsequent events are free and open to the public.
