KUALA LUMPUR – Laureus World Sport Academy Members have teamed up to support an innovative youth rugby program, launched in Kuala Lumpur today, which it is hoped will ultimately improve the standard of international rugby in Malaysia.

Charitable foundation Yayasan Rakyat 1Malaysia (YR1M) and the COBRA Rugby Club were joined by former All Blacks captain Sean Fitzpatrick, Laureus Chairman Edwin Moses, Olympic decathlete Daley Thompson and French World Cup winning footballer Marcel Desailly at the launch of the 1Malaysia COBRA Youth Rugby Program.

The program also aims to use rugby as a means to reach out to young people in Malaysia to address social problems and to develop leadership initiatives.

COBRA has been involved in the development of rugby since 1967. With a flourishing schools program already in place, they are now developing a complementary youth program which will keep talented rugby players in the sport after they complete their secondary education. The Laureus Sport for Good Foundation will lend its experience and expertise to the program.

The Laureus sports legends are in Kuala Lumpur for the 2014 Laureus Sport for Good Global Summit. Staged with the support of YR1M, the Summit brings together representatives from more than 100 sports-based community programs around the world to exchange knowledge and ideas and share expertise.

Laureus Vice-Chairman Sean Fitzpatrick said: “I’m delighted to be part of the launch of this exciting project. I am especially pleased that Laureus is going to be part of this program. Rugby is the ultimate sport where teamwork matters and I know that Laureus and YR1M will work as a team to be able to help young people in Malaysia over the next few years.

“When we were here in Kuala Lumpur for the Laureus World Sports Awards in March, we said that was just the start of our partnership. This week we are holding the Laureus Sport for Good Summit here, thanks to the support of YR1M, and we have been able to announce our tie-up here with COBRA. This is just the start. There is much more we will be doing in the future to ensure that we leave a strong legacy in Malaysia.”

It is hoped the youth program will produce international standard players who can initially play at Under-19 level and subsequently at senior level. The goal is to improve the skills of players and win promotion from their current Division Two status to Division One of the Asian Rugby Football Union Junior Rugby Championships.

Ung Su Ling, Chief Executive Officer, Yayasan Rakyat 1Malaysia, said: “The 1Malaysia COBRA Youth Rugby Program is not only about rugby. It is about using rugby as a tool to reach out to those who need more guidance and more structure to provide them with the necessary mentoring that will take them out of the socially disadvantageous situations they are in and help them become more employable, responsible and productive.”

Supporting YR1M and COBRA in the social aspect of this endeavor is the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation, which is committed to the use of sport as the means to improve the lives of young people. Members of the Laureus World Sports Academy volunteer their time to act as global ambassadors for the Laureus Foundation. Since its inception Laureus has raised over €60 million and currently supports more than 150 projects around the world, which have helped to improve the lives of millions of children.

Yayasan Rakyat 1Malaysia (the People’s 1Malaysia Foundation), which was incorporated in January 2013, is a charitable foundation dedicated towards benefiting Malaysians from all walks of life in line with the principles of 1Malaysia. The Foundation’s activities are geared towards engaging and helping Malaysians, particularly the less fortunate and those in need, and to equip them with building blocks to achieve a better quality of life. Towards this end, the Foundation focuses on three areas – improving quality of life, education and sports. The Foundation is chaired by YAB Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib bin Tun Haji Abdul Razak, the Prime Minister of Malaysia.

TSMSDC MBE Receives Executive Scholarship to Tuck from Johnson Controls

Brenda Odom, President of U-Kno Catering, Inc., Nashville, Tennessee, has been admitted to Tuck School’s “Building a High-Performing Minority Business” program!  The program will be held on the Tuck campus at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire on November 16-21, 2014.  It will start on Sunday, November 16, with an opening reception, dinner, and program orientation and will end on Friday, November 21 with morning classes followed by a graduation ceremony.

Her attendance is made possible as the Winner of the Class 1 TSMSDC Minority Supplier of the Year,(with sales under $1M), through an educational scholarship from the TriState Minority Supplier Development Council (TSMSDC) at its annual Impact Awards in April 2014. The funding is provided by Johnson Controls, Inc. (JCI) and the scholarship presentation was made by Mary Dowell, Vice President, Foundation Affairs and Global Community Relations, JCI’s corporate office in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

During the intense program week, classes will be scheduled all day with peer networking opportunities to maximize the on-campus experience! As an added bonus, the program will also feature guest speakers who will provide supply chain overviews, share market penetration strategies, discuss group purchasing organizations, and other related topics. In addition, there will be face-to-face meetings with industry supplier diversity professionals to explore new opportunities.
