You may be an ambassador to England or France. You may like to gamble; you might like to dance. You may be the heavyweight champion of the world. You may be a socialite with a long string of pearls. But you’re gonna have to serve somebody, yes indeed you’re gonna have to serve somebody. Well, it may be the devil, or it may be the Lord. But you’re gonna have to serve somebody.
You might be a rock ‘n’ roll addict prancing on the stage. You might have drugs at your command, women in a cage. You may be a businessman or some high-degree thief. They may call you doctor, or they may call you chief. But you’re gonna have to serve somebody, yes you are. You’re gonna have to serve somebody. Well, it may be the devil, or it may be the Lord
But you’re gonna have to serve somebody.
You may be a state trooper, you might be a young Turk. You may be the head of some big TV network. You may be rich or poor, you may be blind or lame. You may be living in another country under another name. But you’re gonna have to serve somebody, yes you are. You’re gonna have to serve somebody. Well, it may be the devil, or it may be the Lord
But you’re gonna have to serve somebody.
You may be a construction worker working on a home. You may be living in a mansion or you might live in a dome. You might own guns and you might even own tanks. You might be somebody’s landlord, you might even own banks. But you’re gonna have to serve somebody, yes. You’re gonna have to serve somebody. Well, it may be the devil, or it may be the Lord
But you’re gonna have to serve somebody.
You may be a preacher with your spiritual pride. You may be a city councilman taking bribes on the side. You may be work-in’ in a barbershop, you may know how to cut hair. You may be somebody’s mistress, may be somebody’s heir. But you’re gonna have to serve somebody, yes. You’re gonna have to serve somebody. Well, it may be the devil, or it may be the Lord. But you’re gonna have to serve somebody.
Might like to wear cotton, might like to wear silk. Might like to drink whiskey, might like to drink milk. You might like to eat caviar; you might like to eat bread. You may be sleeping on the floor, sleeping in a king-sized bed. But you’re gonna have to serve somebody, yes. Indeed you’re gonna have to serve somebody. Well, it may be the devil, or it may be the Lord
But you’re gonna have to serve somebody.
You may call me Terry; you may call me Timmy. You may call me Bobby; you may call me Zimmy. You may call me R.J.; you may call me Ray. You may call me anything but no matter what you say. Still, you’re gonna have to serve somebody, yes. You’re gonna have to serve somebody. Well, it may be the devil, or it may be the Lord. But you’re gonna have to serve somebody.

Today, politicians constantly remind us we are a “nation of laws and not of men,” a common expression of the rule of law. Yet the daily images that permeate our social media and broadcast airways appear to indicate that the rule of law explicitly only applies to black, brown and poor citizens of the United States. The double standard of law enforcement demonstrated at the recent siege on the Capitol building incited by President Trump versus the protest of the past summer over “black lives” only further distorts the expectation of fair and equal justice for all.
It has become clear that the former president, many republican politicians, and law enforcement officials are truly serving themselves, not the U.S. Constitution or this nation. Meanwhile, the 74 million disillusioned trump supporters are serving him by continuing to believe the lies, making numerous threats about an impending civil war, as well as their refusal to acknowledge Joe Biden as President.
White privilege accompanied by white rage, the death of Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, the Black Lives Matter movement, presidential elections and the continuing assault on black people in general, and COVID has proven to be much more than lady liberty can handle. Americans are rendered numb as everybody ponders what will be next; assassinations, civil war or a dysfunctional governmental response to Trump’s failed agenda during the next four years. Who will the people of this nation become or who will they serve, if democracy is to triumph over the hatred and distrust flowing over this country does not cease? What legacy or gift will we leave our children, our communities, our country, and the World?
This is not the first time that such a toxic atmosphere has existed in America. Turmoil over voting has always been a factor. So, upon examining this nation’s history after the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, one can readily see how in late 1865 the seeds of white supremacy was turned into a movement during the term of President Andrew Johnson.
As we stand on the shoulders of Martin Luther King, Jr.; Muhammad Ali, Michelle Obama, Jessie Rattley, Andrew Young, Barack Obama, Gordon Parks, Fannie Lou Hamer, Shirley Chisholm, Malcolm X, Jim Brown, Sam Cooke and the millions of blacks that have lost their lives crossing the ocean in bondage, lost their lives in slavery, lost their lives in lynching’s, lost their lives in marches for freedom, lost their lives for being BLACK, lost their lives for refusing to be less to the world and each other!
We are connected to each other through time and space. There is nothing stronger than the love for self, for family… as we approach the mountain top! So, the question for us all as we move forward while honoring MLK, George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and our descendants is… WHO ARE YOU GOING TO SERVE?
