SoHarlem’s mission is to “create equitable opportunities  in Harlem through cultural industries workforce  development.” The social enterprise connects people  living in Harlem with opportunities designed to help  them achieve economic self-sufficiency.

With the assistance and guidance of a cadre of designers, artisans, and other creatives, SoHarlem  has been part of the transformation of the once underutilized Manhattanville Factory District into a vibrant successful community, which has employed local residents since its founding in 2011.

During that time, SoHarlem launched more than twenty successful micro-businesses  comprising everything from custom-made couture garments to fashion accessories and face  masks.

The three honored fashion industry creatives include; designer, teacher and self-described ‘fashion engineer’ Julian Asion, who will receive the Hidden Gem award, Harlem’s gift to American fashion. Dapper Dan will receive the Cultural Fusion award. Consultant, model, and jewelry designer, JoAni Johnson, will receive the Harlem Fashion Model award.
